Mozambique is fast becoming one of the most popular tourist destinations in Southern Africa.
The country offers a unique cultural and historical heritage. Pristine tropical beaches and coral reefs line the entire 2500km coastline. It is a Mecca for scuba, snorkel divers and adventure seekers. The Indian Ocean hosts a diverse variety of marine life which offers endless opportunities for divers and fishermen alike.
Colonial rule was established in Mozambique by Portugal in 1919; however it is now an independent country after national liberation in June 1975. It is ranked the 33rd largest country according to it's size with 10 provinces. Mozambique's local style consists of a vibrant blend of African, Arab and Portuguese influences, providing a refreshing contrast to other countries in the Southern African region. The diversity of the country can be seen from Maputo's modern bustling city streets and vibrant night life to the colourful markets and small fishing villages which dot the coast.
Food is of the Afro-Portuguese style in contrast favourably with the British culinary tradition prevalent to other countries in the region.
The town of Xai-Xai, formerly known as Joćo Belo is the capital of Gaza Province and is situated 224km North of Maputo on the banks of the Limpopo River. Xai-Xai is a bustling town with sprawling settlements of houses, markets and shops. Tourists generally stop off for supplies in Xai-Xai with the real attraction being the nearby beach (Praia Do Xai-Xai) which is an extremely popular tourist destination.
A massive reef running parallel (50m from the beach) provides natural protection from the strong waves at high tide and forms several small pools at low tide. Locals wade through the pools collecting shell fish which they then sell to the tourists. Praia Do Xai-Xai is renowned for its fishing and diving opportunities.
