Lion Rock River Lodge

Lion Rock River Lodge (GPS S 25° 22.742; E 031° 44.232 ) is an exclusive privately owned residential lodge with extraordinary views from all living rooms, bedrooms and verandas onto free roaming Big 5 territory. In fact it is the only lodge in Mjejane Game Reserve that offers this unique facility.

Lion Rock River Lodge

In addition huge undercover patios and verandas offer stupendous panoramic views over a magnificent stretch of the Crocodile River where major game trails converge onto a large sandbank more or less opposite the lodge as well as views over the game corridor linking the Kruger National Park and Mjejane Game Reserve.

Opportunities for spotting game (Big 5 included) and a variety of birds from the lodge are outstanding. Each day the calls of fish eagles resound throughout this riverine environment as do the familiar honks and grunts of hippos.

Lion Rock River Lodge

The large game trails that converge on the river bank are indicative of hundreds of years of intense big game (elephant, buffalo, rhino, hippo and a variety of antelope) activity to and from the river. Consequently predator activity is also high along this stretch of the river. Lion and leopard have been seen from the lodge on numerous occasions and kills have also been seen.

Lion Rock River Lodge

The lodge overlooks a large sandbank on the Kruger side of the river which is used by elephant, hippo, buffalo and rhino as a favoured resting and drinking spot on water’s edge. This sandbank also serves as a preferred point of departure for buffalo and elephants crossing the river to and from the Kruger and Mjejane respectively.

A number of large crocodiles patrol this stretch of the river and have been seen to take young buffalo and other game from time to time.

Because this lodge is on the very edge of a Big 5 game corridor you might even find a lion sleeping in the boma! So keep your eyes peeled.

Lion Rock River Lodge

Lion Rock River Lodge is under the day to day supervision of a resident FGASA accredited game ranger who is available for taking occupants on day and night drives through Big 5 territory in the lodges own open safari vehicle.

A second area under thatch with frameless glass balustrades offers an ideal reading spot with uninterrupted views of the river. A third area serves as a very private tanning veranda.
