The house derives its name from a nearby hill (Shikumbu) in the Kruger Park which was home to the chief of an iron age community that resided at another nearby hill called Masorini. Masorini, which dates back to the 19th century, has foundries that smelted and forged iron artefacts and is the second most important archaeological site in the Kruger after Thulamela.

What makes Shikumbu especially appealing is that it shares a common boundary with the Kruger National Park and this provides its owners with a tranquil "back to nature" Kruger Park bush experience. The eastern boundary of the portion of land on which Shikumbu Lodge is situated is also the western fence line of the Kruger National Park. The setting is simply stunning.
