Drive or fly to San Martinho
Bilene is easily accessible on good tarred roads all the way from Gauteng. You do not need a 4X4 to reach Bilene. If you have a light aircraft you can also fly into Bilene.
Road
From Gauteng, take the N4 toll road to the Lebombo SA/Mozambican border post just beyond Komatipoort (25° 26.33 S; 31°59.07 E). This is an easy 4.5 hour drive from Johannesburg. Once through the border (passports required but no visa needed for S.A. residents staying for less than 30 days) follow the EN4 toll road for the next 85km (1h) to Maputo. This road enters Maputo along the Avenida Da Namaacha. At the signboard to Bilene/Xai-Xai/Inhambane, on the outskirts of the city, turn left into Avenida de Mocambique. This road feeds onto the EN1 north through a congested and slow moving stretch of road lined by informal sidewalk markets.
The EN1 north to Xai-Xai has been resurfaced and is in excellent condition all the way to the village of Macia (25°01.25S; 33°05.49E) which is approximately 160km from Maputo. At Macia take the turn-off to the right (R453) to Bilene (25°17.18 S; 33°14.45 E). The 33km stretch of road from Macia to Bilene is somewhat narrower than the EN1 but is also tarred all the way. Once in Bilene follow the signboards to the San Martinho Beach Club development site. Enjoy the trip.
