Prior to the arrival of boer settlers in the early 1800's very few people lived in the area as it had been a Zulu Royal Hunting Preserve. At the time game was abundant and elephant common. Indigenous timber was also plentiful. A number of trekker families settled in the Midlands as evidenced by farm names such as Geelhout, Boschhoek and Boschfontein. Many historical buildings dating back to the 1880's are found in the KwaZulu-Natal midlands. Settler churches include: St John Gowrie in Nottingham Road was built in 1885; St Andrews, The Dargle was built in 1882; St Pauls at Curry's Post was built in 1876; St Mathews at Lidgetton and St Lukes in Howick was opened 1869.

Nottingham Road Village Gowrie Farm Golf and Fly-fishing Estate is situated on the outskirts of the village of Nottingham Road which was founded in 1905. Nottingham Road is steeped in history. The village derives its name from Fort Nottingham which was established in 1856 to protect farmers in the area against raiding Bushmen. Fort Nottingham is located some 15km south of the present day village of Nottingham Road and the history of this garrison settlement can be seen in the Fort Nottingham Museum. Nottingham Road is a village with old world values, friendly people and long-standing institutions. It serves as a major access point to many nature reserves (such as Loteni and Kamberg) and resorts on the slopes of the Drakensberg. |
